It has been long since i documented my track days experience here in Qatar Racing Club! Simply because,i have been too good at making excuses for myself! At one time i blame our long weekend race events,Qatar Mile for instance,that takes all our weekends and off days. Open track days usually fall on a day after main event in Qatar Racing Club,and believe you me its usually tiresome to wake up from the Qatar Mile weekend's hangover for a rubber screams and doughnuts of a track day! Which by far is pretty a thrilling site to miss!
Besides,track days in the past was just a chill out day with a few drivers turning up. How things have changed! From just a chill out corner to an exciting go-hard-or-go-home adventure. The local boys have sharpened their skills,they drive like its a championship,knocking off all those clipping zone as a cloud of smoke chase their tails on a floodlit pad. What is even more better,they get the chance to utilize the dynamic nature of the QRC track layout. Try new things,race it,break it FIX IT and repeat. Drifting culture is the new 'pop' this part of town.
Things have changed so fast...in the past days,you would take your equipment out to hunt these cars and get disappointment when only two or three cars shows up. Now the number has drastically increased, We are talking least 10 cars for 6 hrs epic tests...tests....tests... doughnuts and burnouts.
Qatar Racing Club has used this occasion as a build up to its hugely celebrated drift championship in the regions. The drivers take these track days as serious as any other event within the calendar of events in the Qatar Racing Club. The turn up is amazing,and the fun is real.
Drift Culture has swept this part of the city. Some slick tires fit on 2jz making rubber slicks and screaming at the drift pad the whole night. What is exciting is even the fact that the track is opened for as many laps as the driver wants. You get those rubber burned out to the bone!
As one of the officials Ahmed explains,Open Track Days isn't a track day organizer as such.For a 100QAR (25USD) you enjoy over 6 hrs of drift practice,testing and thrill at the QRC facility. Access to garage and paddock area as well. The QRC Track lay out is very dynamic,as the staff and team make various layout and format that takes you through the fast speedway banking before sweeping sharply around a hair pin into the clipping zones.With multiples collection of sharp varying degrees that challenges your skills before you spill back into the high speed bank once again. And the good thing with a dynamic lay out, you usually have a new lay out on each track day. Making it adventurous,challenging and just thrilling under a floodlit epic 'drift circuit'.
Many pro drift drivers have developed from this. Spiraling their skills at the open track day and finding the podium a perfect opportunity to try new things in their car builds,performance and driving. Usually,it is the perfect spot to just go and do all you errors and learn from experts before the championship return. Its more of an off season in the mid season kind of relationship.
And these drivers looks like they always just want more of it!
Rolling into the floodlit paddock at Qatar Racing Club drift pad,i was greeted by a pretty diverse selection of cars. Parts of them as charming for an open track day,hugely built and tuned to the precision of drifting. The gusto that flares your face into the emptiness that awaits,is stellar feeling.Spotting so many 600bhp time attacker machines,and there is less limitations. As long as your car meets the safety requirements at inspection,you are good to go.
On this particular one we came to shake hands with this S14 Nissan Silvia by Qatar Drift Team (rather looked as a new entry at first site) Though we might have crossed paths with this car last season when we held Formula-Qatar Drift Championship. Not sure if Ahmed Allouh will be using this car in Middle East Drift Championship in a fortnight from now,but we saw him climb into Ali Al Thani's bluebird,listened to its humongous 2jz tick and then kicked in the gas and throttle. That thing might be packing closer 700bhp ponies,two accords with fat tires and clingers.And is a total recommendation from us!

Soud Al Attiya,GT Customizer Nissan 350Z was here. Few days after getting a hard fought 3rd place at The Federal Tyre King Of Desert Pro Drift Series in Bahrain. Looked awesome and sounded great as usual. With a good driver on the pilot seat,he has definitely warmed up his tri-ace tires for the season finale at Middle East Drift Championship.

Asfour, is one of the few drivers dedicated and faithful to the track days.We can rarely count the days we have missed to spot him at the track on a track day...And it sure starting to pay off. His drifting skill has spiraled and will be catching soon on his LSX V8 project!

Last night open track day was taking place in the very first warm nights of the first days of summer in Qatar. Pretty warm to be out there taking a few shots and smelling the smoke rubber grind on the drift pad.The presence of glorious smoke clouding the floodlight after fast ride made my Sunday a noteworthy event in itself. Will be back tomorrow with the 4X4 Free Style Drifting!
